The 2 most important things are that I've graduated at the HAN University in Automotive Engineering and i've got my first full-time job at Reed Business. Offcourse i experienced lots of other things too, but at this moment i don't have much time to blog about all kinds of small jibber-jabber.

Anyway, today i saw a short presentation on the net that i wanted to share with you guys. Shall this be the next way to read your local paper or favorite magazine in the near future? Can we walk all over the world in a photo-realistic environment and interact with each other (like SecondLife or something like that)?

10ushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08613181361152948491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32085655.post-1164150596511120232006-11-21T22:03:00.000Z2006-11-21T23:11:29.476ZFuture role of mediaOften I think about the future, will there still are any tv guide's or newspapers? Will people still watch programs in a fixed schedule? Will it still be the dream of small children to be a moviestar or film director? I don't think so..

In the small village of Hoogland (where I live), a small group called "initiativegroup Hoogland on GlassFibre" is trying to raise interest for setting up glassfibre connections to the individual home's of people. I am part of that group because in my opinion setting up this open fibre network is the first step in the new role that internet is going to play in the mediascape and society.

This open network can do a lot of more things than supply a fast internet connection, cheap telephone conversations and more tv channels. I think it will bring the community of Hooglanders closer together. With a open network people will be easier in touch with friends and family. Doctors and relatives can check-up on old and sick folks that are immobile. Villagers could share all kinds of media, whether it is a blog about their new lawnmower or it is a musical from the elementary school.

The old role of broadcasting stations will change because people will be their own broadcasting stations. People will only watch media that they find interesting enought to search for, and look at it at a moment that is best for them.
Marketeers must find new ways to place adds in these kind of environments, adds that are relevant for the specific user that is watching them. People that working in the media business must be aware of this and anticipate... If they don't hurry they might "miss the boat"!

Keynote speech by Digital futurist Mike Walsh to the graduating students of the Australian Film, Radio & Television School.10ushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08613181361152948491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32085655.post-1162239262173041922006-10-30T19:55:00.000Z2006-10-30T21:04:33.173ZFuture or Fiction
"Set in 2015 it charts the history of the Internet, the evolving mediascape and the way news and newspapers were affected by the growth in online news.

It coined the word 'Googlezon' from a future merger of Google and Amazon to form the Google grid, and speaks of news wars with the Times becoming a print only paper for the elite culminating in EPIC Evolving Personalised Information Construct"

For some of you this will be a classic movie which you've already seen a few years ago. I must say that the work is still varying and interesting. The new website is "live" since august 21st. At this moment AMT.nl is being fine-tuned by internal specialists in fields like usability, search engine optimization and lead generation. Luckily, I also get involved with this after-development fine tune projects and I learn a lot of it. I'd even had some interviews with potential users.
On the other hand I have the feeling that before the team of specialists arrived my opinion was more appreciated and more often taken for granted than it is now. But then again, they are the specialists and I am just a trainee, so I’ll must learn to live with that.

My work at RBI is not only about web-editing and developing, I am also “hired” because of my study at the institute of automotive engineering. And therefore I’ll get to do all kinds of little jobs to help the editors for the AMT magazine. For these jobs I spend a lot of time behind my desk researching new kinds of automotive equipment or innovations, but I also get to do a lot of “fun” jobs, the better things in life! For example I’ve driven hundreds of kilometers in cars other boys my age can only dream about to ride. I’ve had a photo-session in the new Lexus GS450h, but also did acceleration-, braking- and noise level tests.

In the meantime the chief editor offered me job at RBI when I finish my study. There is a gap of a half year when I finished my study at the institute of automotive engineering till the beginning of next school year. In that half year I can guarantee to work for one or another. When the new school year starts I’ll want to learn something that can make me much more valuable in the job market. In my opinion there are too many people that can do what I can do now, so that makes me expandable :(.

With my hands in my hair I am still desperately searching for a good way to spend my last 2 years learning, whether it is parttime, fulltime or double fulltime, whether it is in the Netherlands, US or whatever, whether it is at a company such as RBI or a private school.

If u have tips or advice please let me know, in the meantime I am trying to write my final thesis which I can’t tell you a lot about at this moment…. Okay just one thing, what I am developing now will hopefully generate lots and lots of user generated content and can be used for a lot of the b2b sites that belongs to RBI.

Hope to see you again on my blogspot,

Martijn10ushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08613181361152948491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32085655.post-1154550529374302672006-08-05T20:27:00.000Z2006-10-23T20:00:25.453ZWhoIs Martijn RoskamHi there,

My name is Martijn Roskam. I live in a small village called Hoogland, That's in the Netherlands. This year i hope to round up my study Automotive Engineering in Arnhem. It is a study that takes 4 years and deals with all kinds of subjects relating automobiles, trucks, motorbikes and everything else with wheels and engines and doesn't roll over rails. About 50 percent of the students that begin at the "Institute of Automotive Engineering" get to do the final year. In the final year you'll get to choose from 2 majors.

Designer / tester

Technical and commercial engineer

After lots and lots of doubts I chose the last one, together with some extra subjects like technical accident analytics and special vehicles. Looking back on the study i can say that it was a difficult one (specially the complex math and dynamics were hard for me). But I haven't got the diploma in my pocket yet!! I'd also had 2 traineeships. The first at "EurotaxOlyslager", internationally known as EurotaxGlass where i worked on the technical helpdesk for workshops in the Netherlands and Swiss. I also conducted a marketresearch on what was the best way to penetrate the Dutch market with Eurotax Repair Estimate (a program for making damage calculations on cars). My second traineeship was at Reed Business Information, a world-wide publisher for the b2b market. I did all kinds of jobs for "Auto & Motor Techniek" The magazine for everyone that is working in the automotive sector in the Netherlands. But mostly i was busy developing a new internetsite (click here for the old site) for the magazine. The new site is almost ready and I expect it will go "live" in a few months.

At the traineeship at RBI (Reed Business Information) I found out that I was very interested in developing internetsites and -utility's. With the help of E-engineers and all kinds of external bureaus and company's i can make reality of the ideas that are in my head. RBI is was also pleased with me and offered me the chance to stay in the vacation and make some money. After the vacation I'll stay and write my thesis (don't know if that's the right word) at RBI. The thesis will be about another E-utility that I will be developing with others. I'm sorry to say that i can't be specific about my thesis right now, but details will follow in the future!!

The actual reason why I created this blog is to exercise my English since I haven't practiced it since junior high school. After graduating from the "Institute of Automotive Engineering" i would like to get a master's degree at Nyenrode in Breukelen (Netherlands) or Northwood University in Florida (US) in marketing/management.

I hope that I can change my hobby's in profiterable work. So after my master hopefully I end up in some kind of mix between Automotive and E-Business.

Maybe I'll see you again on my blog or maybe I'll meet you in real life!!

PS if you have any tips for improving my English or comments... Please let me know!!!!

Martijn Roskam partying in Hoogland

Martijn
10ushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08613181361152948491noreply@blogger.com
